The first time I was exposed to Toots and the Maytals, I was a freshman in college. I had this buddy I played lacrosse with, and he listened to them constantly. “TOOTS!” he would shout whenever one of their songs came on. Seeing as this was the only group he listened to, there was always quite a bit of shouting. It didn’t take too long for me to understand what all of his shouting was about. It was not long before I had also become a raving Toots and the Maytals fan. For those of you that don’t know, Toots Hibbert is the Godfather of reggae, and has been making music since the dawn of the reggae era. In the 10 plus shows that I have been privelaged enough to see, Toots has yet to have less than amaze. Being at one of his shows is what I would imagine a Baptist revival on steriods would be like. The amount of energy and love spread from Toots and the Maytals, is enough to power a rocket ship.
The beautiful thing about Toots and the Maytals, is their love of the music, and the fans. At almost every show I have been to, Toots invites fans on stage to sing with him. And yes, I have been that fan. He also hands out waters, and always is very approachable post show. It is amazing to me that this reggae icon is not only still performing, but also knocking it out of the park. If you are a true lover of music, regardless of the genere, I implore you to see Toots and the Maytals while you still can.
