Honestly, forget about Black Uhuru (even though that troupe kinda rules) and Steel Pulse, or whoever else one might associated with UK bred and born reggae. Instead, all you need is one Mr. Dennis Bovell. The guy doesn’t receive the sort of respect off that island as he deserves, but over the last four decades, the producer’s worked up an array of dubbed out instrumentals, more lush than some of the JA fair like Scientist of Lee Perry.
Don’t be mistaken, though. Bovell gets minimal, just not a stripped down as those folks. Decibel: More Cuts And Dubs, issued through Pressure Sounds, gives listeners a taste of each different musical stance the guy takes. There’s even a bit of early jungle on “Harmoniser Dub.” If that doesn’t please listeners – and it should – “Shi-Cago” gets as funky as a dub can by adding in a bit of bluesy harmonica and weaving the rest of the composition around that. Boss.
