A Couple of Online Radio Shows Worth a Look
Upstroke radio showThere is an online radio station that has two great reggae shows on the air. FCC Free Radio is one of these underground radio stations like Pirate Cat, if you have heard of it. Recently Pirate Cat was fined by the FCC for $10,000 but they are still kicking, and so is FCC Free.
The Upstroke is on from 10 to midnight (California Time) every Thursday and available as a podcast from the FCC Free web site. They feature classic reggae but also work in an interesting mix of California fusion reggae and ska and dub. They also have humor segments and special guests, including last week’s guest W. Kamau Bell, a California comedian who has worked on Comedy Central and other shows. If you are down to check out some cool reggae, check out the Upstroke. Hosted by SF comic, Conor Kellicut, writer Jeremy Lipps and their brother Jamison, produced by Leon Wheeler too.
On FCC Free Fridays from 6pm to 8pm the Rasta Vibration Show brings solid roots reggae straight from Jamaica to you. This show is also available as a podcast on the FCC Free web site. These guys also bump some pretty serious Dancehall too. With hosts DJ Irie Selecta and Rolly D. These guys are also involved with some shows going on around the Bay Area.
Based in San Francisco, FCC Free also has a bunch of other freaky shows like Sexploration and the John Miller Program. These are all independent radio shows that often feature pretty good indie music and comedy. Both of these reggae shows are pretty good.
